LIGHT OF LIFE
I wonder why candles are blown out when people celebrate birthdays. The only reason I can think of, is, to maybe signify that a certain number of years have been completed in a person's life (?)
Switching channels, I saw a scene from the movie Unnai Charanadaindhaen. The birthday girl is about to blow the candles out, when a guy in the party makes an interesting suggestion - why not light an oil lamp instead? Now that set me thinking!
Isn't giving birth to a new flame of light more appropriate than extinguishing existing ones? After all, a new flicker of light does denote hope, and as it burns brighter, the lamp symbolises the person's bright future. What can be a more positive thought on a day everyone's happy for the chosen one! A lamp's flame will die, too. But that will be as natural as death.
Sometimes, you get the nicest ideas from sources you least expect!

Hey good one
i agree with ur views, but i still like cake cutting, candle blowing.... life is not full of happiness and colour always and occasions like birthdays give u an opportunity and reason to celebrate...
I thought it was because you were wishing for something when you blew the candles out !!!
yeah that idea of a lamp sounds nice..
hello
the blowing of candle is western style and it is inauspicious acording to hindus view, as u told lighting a lamp and going to temple was what we did always now this syndrome of blowing light and many other things we are learning from west and following it with out even thinking
That's a great story. Waiting for more. » » »
