I used to be able to finish a book from cover to cover in a single sitting. Now, I can barely read two pages without a to-do list item knocking on the door of my head, the thought of “what time is it”, or even to pause and make note of something I want to google further and then tumble down into a rabbit hole of related thoughts.
On the other hand, it seems possible to spend an inordinate amount of time scrolling through social media or video outlets without much effort. Clearly, the brain wants easier rewards for lazier efforts. The bite-sized nature of content has also been seductively successful in trying to cram into every possible free moment using the mobile phone as weapon.
I want to find people that can still read fat books and stay distanced from their electronic devices at will. I want to be those people. I do not want to be a casualty of this millennium’s war on the human attention span.
