OF NORTH INDIANS

Today, my co-worker was telling me about how irritating she finds it when she hears the word "North Indian" (I happened to mention that word somewhere as I was talking, I guess).

"Is every person who lives in a state other than Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, and Kerala, a North Indian to you?" she asked. It has been a very long time since someone asked me such an insightful question. Got me thinking. I guess she was right. I don't recall referring to someone living in Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a South Indian. Hmmm...

And then, I tripped over a couple of facts by the same logic. A Mumbaikar would be a West Indian. I imagine Brian Lara opening for Mumbai with Sachin Tendulkar, in the Ranji Trophy. Haha!

Also, the Darjeeling Tea Factory can be called an East India Company! Hahaha!

Wonder if we can think up more like these? :-)

I never knew the term "north indian" is as offensive as the term "madrasi". I've heard another one as "Northie" to ref a North Indian and all other "ies" to ref to people frm other parts of the country.

Thanks for leaving a note in my blog abt your comeback. I knew u'd be back eventually, blogging is so addictive there is no escape :)

Good luck with New City/New Life. Keep bloggin we'll be around to read.

:-) Good one Vinesh.. The 'West Indian' part was best.. hehe, well if Sachin n Lara opened for mumbai, in Ranji trophy, guess that would be the end of that trophy. Next year they might not conduct it, for sheer one-sidedness :)) Even know, only the most jobless of people, follow it! Sad state of affairs ... :)

Brian Lara is West Indies u told West Indian. South Indian is including Pondcherry and Lakshadeep. We can call North Indian’s as Himalayan’s it will be correct, because most North Indian state are in Himalayan Range.
Keep Posting Vinesh

All the south indians are refered to as madrasis, so why not the other way around? Imagine going around calling everyone as maharastrian or bihari or whatever. Infact try calling a maharastrian as a bihari and u wud be glad if u dun have a black eye. Same thing here with Chinks. Chinese, Malaysians, Indonesians, Vietnamese, Burmese, Thais...try differentiating them ;) And remember the result is the same as a sothappals between maharastrians and biharis ;)

I wudnt wanna take the risk ma! Simple.

hahaha...this has always been on my mind too..atleast be happy that there's a generalisation to a certain extent...Else one would be referring to Rajasthani's as North-West Indians and us tamil's as South-East Indian's!! And imagine a central government catering only to Central Indians(Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh)!!! lol...

On the cricketing front, let's hope that atleast Lara opening for India, helps us clinch the World Cup(and allow you to get a new comp in the process)!!

Vinesh said...

@Ravi: Thanks man!

@Fathima: I think this kelvi will become as famous as the vaazhappazham comedy.

@Vikram: Good one da, Central Govt for the Central Indians. thx for prayer that I get a new computer.. :-)

every1 here below the vindhyas is a madrasi, apporam why cant we call any1 who speaks hindi north indian, and they also look down upon us, esp the way we ear sambar, licking our hands, and i remind em tat we atleast use only our right hand not the left like the northies, now which is worse??

Unknown said...

hey but guess what, i forgot this back then...We Indians,in a global sense, are actually referred to as 'East Indians' thanks to an error by the legendary Christopher Columbus!! what a tragedy..how do we call each other now?? Check this out...

Great to see that you're back :)

Oh boy, the eternal North vs. South India conflict - I see a lot of that on campus too. Less offensiveness and regional jingoism & more understanding and mutual acceptance is what we need...

BTW, on our campus, "Southie" or other such terms usually refer to people from Andhra Pradesh, because there are so many of them here!

Welcome back Vinesh, Life teaches us lessons..! I am glad you came back with a postive bang.!

By the way, I've heard that North Indians ( LOL) refers to all South Indians as MADARAASI'S.!

Of course anyone to our North is North Indian.!! So that logic of Bombay being West Indian could great for India.!!! ( Let's get some good West Indian cricketers to our team)!

Its like every other south indian in the North being called a Madrasi :(

Pallavi is spot on. Whenever you tell folks North of TN that you are a tamilian, they assume that you are from Chennai. They probably think TN is something ilke the vatican !
