SCENT OF AN ENVELOPE

Air Mail Envelope
Ma came home this evening with an envelope in her hand. The moment I saw the words "BY AIR MAIL - PAR AVION", I was tremendously excited! Who could it be??

I ripped the cover open, and it was from my best friend Vipin! He is a marine engineer who is on his first assignment with UNIVAN. We've known each other from school, and the passing years have only made our relationship stronger. In between, there have been times when we simply had no time to keep in touch. Yet whenever we met, even if it was after several months, it never felt as if we'd been apart.

When he moved to a different city to study marine engineering, we used to write to each other once in two days. Snailmail!! I have so been corrupted by e-mail that I can't even imagine how I wrote letters those days! Some of the letters I wrote back then, were over ten pages long!

Vipin's ship is now in West China. Life as a junior marine engineer is very tough, he writes, and the only things keeping him afloat are his memories of home and me! I'm reading the letter @ two words per minute. I don't want it to end!

I have other people now, who are very close to me; some even closer than Vipin. But no one else can become my best friend. For the others only know me for what I am today.

Vipin knows why I am, what I am today.

They say best friends hear what you dont say ! That is true in my case !!

Shifting to the snailmail thing.. I think it is a wonderful feling to write letters. I used to do it after being addicted to email, but no more !!

One thing for sure ... snail mails are like greetings ... treasured memories !!

Good one! When some friends can't even send emails these days, it is so good to know that your friend actually writes letters!

Touched. Hats off to long-distance friendship!. Although I believe that 'out of sight means out of mind', posts such as these gives me the sign that 'friendship does work on long distance'....

Hey thanks for your response folks.. I would like to say here, one week after my posting this, that I still haven't written my reply letter to Vipin...

Yes, I know that being busy is no excuse..but it's just I need atleast a day to write to him. It's different from e-mail. I want every word in that letter I write to reflect how much I love and miss him.

Am doing it right after this reply comment :-)

yeah!!! Letters! there's something magical about them , had been writing letters for the past 15 years! have tresured all my letters! even people get annoyed when i write letters! because i've never learnt in my life to write short letters! minimum of five pages!! yeah the arrival of the net has certainly changed everything concerned with snail mail!
still i write letters! but my friends prefer e-mail for reply!
and even i write it in paper n type the ten pages n send them back! crazy na????

and also getting a letter, i would read it one hundred times that dasy, it is such a beautiful thing to see a letter addressed to us!!!

and Waiting for the postman, he knows me well, and when i write letters I go mad till i get a reply and well what next! the cycle continues!!!!

A very thoughtful post!!! And great friend you have! regards to him!!!

CHEERS!!!!
