NO CHOICES BARRED

I met a family friend today, a nice middle-aged man, whose son is in Standard 12.

Uncle: Vinesh, so how is your software line?
Me: I buy only VIP Frenchie. It is very comfortable, thank you uncle.
Uncle: Hahaha! I mean your IT industry..
Me: My IT industry?? Yea, what about it?
Uncle: How is the scope? You studied Computer Engineering, no?
Me: (oh yeaa!!) Yes, uncle, the software industry is doing just great. So what is Varun going to study after his 12th? He must have some plans, right?
Me: I have given him total freedom. I am not a strict father. Let him study as he wishes. I have given him total liberty to study whatever he wants...
Me: Oh that's gr..
Uncle: He can either become a doctor or engineer. The choice is entirely his. I won't interfere at all! Even his mother thinks the same. And his grandfather, uncle, my neighbour, my office colleague..all of us feel that he should be left to his choice...what do you think?
Me: ...

I looked at Varun. He seemed to be living my life all over again.

And what is wrong with becoming an engineer or doctor? Unless the kid has some deep interest is art or music or whatever, why shouldn't he be an engineer? Most of the kids don't have such deep passions, they are pretty clueless. And if they don't have anything particular they want to do, they miht as well choose a lucrative career.

My 2 cents worth! :-)

Thanks for signing my guestmap :)
But especially thanks for your prayers, they mean more that you know *hugs*

kary, going by what you say then only doctors/engineers should be making money in life (or as a corollary) all doctors/engineers should be having lots of money. But that is not the case.

Infact if people were to pursue something that really interests them, then they would be more happy and probably even be making money.

Janani, most children are clueless about other career or study options because they are hardly encouraged for fine arts or sports. All that is dumped upon them are studies, books and marks!! Then how would they possibly think of any other stream.

Moreover, is success to be determined by money alone or a lucrative job?

cant blame the parents, can we???
dont you agree that there is easy money in the software line??

as much as we play it down..money is important isn't it??

i want to be a writer?
but do i have it in me?
will somebody pay me...?

so now i write code and get paid for it

Doctor or engineer-that hasn't changed yet-how many more years

@Sendhil: I agree with you. ஆட்டு மந்தை is the right term.

@Janani: The cousin I mentioned in the article wants to study Psychology and is also open to Visual Communication.
He is a top ranker in school, a status that unfortunately links his credentials to being bright in Maths & Science. But then, he doesn't have a subject called Psychology..

@Maha: Welcome to the club, li'l sista :-)

@Kary & @Monu: Totally agree with you..money IS a necessity. It runs the world. But ways to earn it are not limited!

@Ravi: "...most children are clueless about other career or study options because they are hardly encouraged for fine arts or sports. All that is dumped upon them are studies, books and marks!! Then how would they possibly think of any other stream..."

Couldn't have said it in any better way buddy...:-)

@Vasanthi: That's my lament Vasanthi. I think things are better in North India than in South India.

@Everyone: Every one of your comments is valuable to me :-)

The reason I never blame children or parents or society for this education farce is because I really don't know who is at fault...

Jus making my observations.. sipping my orange juice :-)

Vinesh, more than a question of blaming, its a question of what people think as "Success". To most its the wealth you create and to many its about the position you hold or how "famous" you are.

I would say (from one of the many angles) that the magnitude of Success would be from the amount of happiness you get from what you do. Money is definitely a factor but when you do what you like, you are sure to succeed in terms of money as well. Moreover, its the hits and falls which make a person more stronger in life.

@Ravi: I totally agree with you.. Jus that, you are sometimes too tired to fight.

@Karan & @Vijay: Thx for your replies. Karan, yea, I guess that's where Varun's gonna land up

I am lucky in a lot of ways...I wanted to be a pilot from when I was 7 yearls old. Sometimes these childhood dreams fade away, but my dad who also wanted to be a pilot but couldnt afford it, was a big support for me. Even though I did Engineering as a back up, my dad kept his promise and has invested lakhs since then in letting me follow my dream. And the happiness you get out of following your dream is something which is ineffable. Parents play a big role in moulding our future and I will always be indebted to them for letting me choose mine.

@Barath: Gotcha buddy :-)

@Manoj: I saw the new Deccan Airlines ad today (seen it?) and it was very touching. Your story is exactly like that!

You really are lucky!

Sometimes, having complete freedom can be a disaster. Take me for example, Majored in Software, freelanced on animation and now i am goin to be a writer. How ironic is that ??

Vinesh said...

Atleast you will blame yourself if things go wrong, instead of your parents.

And if things go right, what better feeling than that? :-)

my bro wanted to become a marine engg (sigh.. i was releived when i knew that he didnt want to become a s/w pro ;-)

but our financial conditions do are barriers.. but still, i've tried my best to convince my dad and the entire family (man, that was a huge job).. to make him take that course...

may be, if he had been given a good exposure (saying studies is different, your dreams are different), he would have choosen a more passionate one ?!
